Ski Safely in Tignes
The Rules
1. Respect for others
People using the pistes must behave in such a way that they do not put other people in danger or harm them, either by their behaviour or with their equipment.
2. Speed and behaviour
People using the pistes must adapt their speed and behaviour to suit their personal abilities as well as the general terrain and weather conditions, the state of the snow and the density of the traffic.
3. Choice of route
A skier or snowboarder coming from behind must choose his route in such a way that he does not endanger skiers or snowboarders ahead.
4. Overtaking
Overtaking can be done from above or below and to the right or left, as long as the person doing the overtaking allows sufficient space for voluntary (or involuntary) movements of the person he is passing.
5. Entering a marked run and starting off
A skier or snowboarder entering a marked run, starting again after stopping or moving upwards on the slopes must look up and down the slopes that he can do so without endangering himself or others.
6. Stopping on the piste
Unless absolutely necessary, a skier or snowboarder must avoid stopping on the piste in narrow places or where visibility is restricted. After a fall in such a place, a skier or snowboarder must move clear of the piste as soon as possible.
7. Going up and down on foot
People who are obliged to go up or down a piste on foot must use the edge of the piste, taking care that neither they nor their equipment is a danger to others.
8. Respect for information, markings and signs
Users must take notice of information about weather and snow/piste conditions and respect all markings and signs on the mountain.
9. Assistance
Anyone witness to or involved in an accident is duty bound to assist, particularly by raising the alarm. If need be, and at the request of the first-aid people, they must put themselves at their disposal.
10. Identification
Every skier or snowboarder and witness, whether a responsible party or not, must exchange names and addresses following an accident.
Top Tips
Wear a helmet. It is crazy to ride a bike without a helmet, so why ski, wearing only a woolly hat? As more skiers start to wear helmets it is even more important for you to do so. In head to head collisions where only one person is wearing a helmet only one person wins!
Exercise and get into shape before the holiday, stretch and warm up each morning before skiing and make sure your first run is a gentle wake up run.
If you're tired rest. Skiing uses lots of energy. Be sure to have some energy boosting snacks with you. At the end of the day, when conditions may be deteriorating, do not try to get that last run in. It's better to quit while you're ahead!
Keep to slopes within your ability range. If you're on a slope that's too tough for you, keep your skis on and side step down. Never remove your skis on steep slopes!
Wear plenty of layers of suitable clothes and always have goggles and sun glasses with you. Ensure you have eyewear suitable for both bright and low light.
Always use a suitable sun cream. UV levels in the mountains are high, especially when the sun is reflected from the snow.
Ski off piste only after expert advice. Off piste skiing can be dangerous and requires a high level of mountain awareness. Never ski alone.
Make sure you are fully insured to cover injuries to yourself and others.
